I was born in Belfast in May 1969 and lived most of my early
life near Glengormley (County Antrim) on the outskirts of Belfast until a
new work challenge brought me to South Lanarkshire in June 1997.
I have been married to Fiona a since 2001 and we live with
our two sons (Mathew & Craig) in Strathaven, just off Hamilton Road.
I believe at the heart of every community is the local people
and therefore, like so many others in this wonderful part of South
Lanarkshire, Fiona and I try to give something back to our community:
For over a decade, Fiona ran the Thursday night Beaver group at
the Strathaven Scout Hall, offering an extremely worthwhile outlet for
energetic kids with an appetite for adventure.
I started my
community life as part of a local residents group
in Meadowside and then joined the Strathaven & District Round Table,
which I chaired until I left in April 2013. During my time at SADRT, we
raised tens of thousands pounds each year for worthy causes in the
Strathaven area and I enjoyed the friendship of a like-minded group of
With 30 years’ sales & marketing experience in the IT
industry, working in partnership with the public sector, I have used this
experience to work in partnership with the local community, my councillor
colleagues and South Lanarkshire Council to try and make the Strathaven,
Stonehouse and the wider Avondale area, the best community in South
promised the people in Avondale, if they elected me to South Lanarkshire
council, I would work on their behalf to secure a better deal for
everyone, no matter their political bias!”
In 2007 and again in 2017, I was elected to council as a
member of the Conservative & Unionist Party.
I have never hidden the fact that I’ve been a lifelong
supporter of the Conservative party because in my opinion, the
Conservatives are the only UK political party that believe at the heart
of everything we do, is hard work. I have a simple view:
services are precious and should only be a safety net and not the safety
blanket that so many seem to enjoy and have built a life n and:
Taxes are a fine
balance! A balance for those who pay taxes and those who receive government
services as a result of taxes collected. As a British citizen, living in
the UK; I’m happy to pay into a system that provides our health needs, our
education, our roads and the myriad of other government services that
supports a balanced economy.
I am also a unionist that believes that our United Kingdom is
Better Together: our four nations (England, Scotland, Wales & Northern
Ireland) held together with a strong government, delivering a nationwide
set of policies that protects and serves our country, our culture and its
citizens (AS ONE). I however have many friends who do not support my
passion for our United Kingdom and while I respect their opinions, I will
never support any political party or government who wish to break up the
country I love and would die for.
When I received the mandate from the ward-5 voters, I promised
that politics would end until the run-up to the next local election; so
until then I will continue work in partnership with all political parties
(where possible) to ensure we all deliver on our promises that we made
prior to the local elections.
I have always stated that I am a team player and in partnership
with Fiona, I intend to help everyone in Avondale and Stonehouse make this
a truly fantastic place to live.
