Fail to plan, then you should plan to fail!
Like any
business, success doesn’t come easy so with my first year in council behind
me, I’m setting new targets for myself to succeed in the coming years. I’ve therefore
taken my time to choose several projects that will make a real difference if
they are successful.
By
focusing on only four or five specific projects, I can spend the time getting
to the heart of the problem and endeavouring to deliver on them during the
next year:
- Murray Drive (Stonehouse): The councils flagship
council estate in the early 1970’s has had no money spent on it since
and today with only 18 homes left in council ownership, the estate is
dogged with problems from the roads to anti social behaviour.
- Stonehouse Library: Stonehouse has one of the worst primary
education records in the whole of South Lanarkshire. While I cannot link
this directly to the child usage (or lack of it) of Stonehouse library,
we can all deduct that there could be a significant connection.
- Council Paper Waste: On an average week a
councillor, like myself receives mountain of paper, which is this day of
age, is simply not necessary.
- Council Staff sickness: The Scottish Government
target for public sector sickness is 4%. While South Lanarkshire council
spends hundreds of thousands of pounds of your council tax money
ensuring they achieve this target, in one SLC department alone (social
work), the council spends another £4m per year paying staff who are on
the sick.
