    Council Staff Sickness  >

After reading the Social Work committee reports month-in, month-out that staff sickness was averaging 4%, it didn’t take long to realise that this epidemic of sickness was costing the South Lanarkshire Council tax payer, around £4m per year, £1m for every 1% sickness.

If you multiply this across the council, the numbers would scare you to death!

When working with the social work directors, I quickly understood that council management were doing all within their powers to reduce sickness and took the epidemic very seriously. This meant even more of your council tax was been spent on management time, private doctors and the list goes on and on!

Clearly there are genuine cases and sadly a large number of council staff are off sick due to serious illnesses and I truly feel for these council employees.

Unfortunately there are still those who just take days off sick for the most minor conditions and I find this irresponsible and needs to be stopped ASAP so the money can be saved and redirected into improving front line services even more.

I have to report that very few councillors take this epidemic seriously and prefer to hide from the problem because of the unions and the strong-hold they have on the council.

My project is to uncover this epidemic enough and target a reduction to around 2%. Imagine if every council in Scotland could half their sickness, including the Scottish government? This would release hundreds of millions back into the country to improve all sorts of government services or simply reduce the tax burden on us all! Why should we all have to pay for those few who are irresponsible?
